the writing tool you didn’t know you needed

What’s the first thing you do when  it’s time to work on the ol’ WIP?

No, no!  Bad, writer!  Bad!

Try again.

That’s right.  Turn on the computer.

And what do you see when you turn on your computer?  Blue?  A windows logo?  Quelle dommage, my little oompah-loompah, how inspiring is that?

I assert that the writing tool that you never knew you needed is the perfect wallpaper background.  It will set your mood for your entire writing session.  Cue your subconscious.  Maybe you want to stick with the same scene for your entire novel, maybe you want to change it up to keep your creativity stirred.  Here are some sites to get you started:

Culture Focus: Ancient Egyptian Sites

Culture Focus: Legendary Places

Religious Sites

Natural Places

The caveat: be sure you have a virus scanner in place before you go downloading wallpapers willy-nilly.  And be leery of any sites with nekkid girls.  They’re usually loaded with spyware and such.

(Under the category of   “Blind Leading the Blind”…When you find the wallpaper you want, find the size you want.  Then right click with your mouse.  Choose  “set as desktop background”, then on the next screen, “stretch” and “set desktop background”.)

Now you can add changing your wallpaper to the long list of procrastination writing tools in your box.

  1. Omigoodness, this is such a great idea! I never would’ve thought of it on my own. I found the perfect sci-fi background for my WIP, and just looking at it makes me want to write. This is a great strategy for writers who are very visual. Thanks for the neat suggestion!
